July 2019 || Monthly Wrap Up

Hello beautiful people!

So … what happened to July?! Seriously, I don’t even KNOW how this month flew by. Part of me is excited since that means fall is closer … but I’m also not an advocate of wishing time away. Ah well, hopefully August doesn’t fly on by!

Thought I’d try something new and post my Instagram images … because, why not?

Mini #bookreview : Matilda by Roald Dahl . ⭐⭐⭐ . "So Matilda's strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into tje world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone." . I finally completed my first of five books for @the.book.junkie.trials ! I'm so glad I picked this, since it felt like I was reading a book for the first time again. Full of childlike wonder and magic, Dahl's 'Matilda' is a powerful story showing the importance of believing in yourself and others. . Pros 💐 Resonates with book lovers on an authentic and relatable level, truly depicting book lovers. 💐 Dahl's novel addresses the importance of education and child empowerment. 💐 The story telling narrative style is compelling and engaging, making the experience more personable. 💐 Dahl tactfully addresses real issues, such as bullying and child neglect. 💐 Satisying feeling of actions have consequences. . Woes 💐 Educators and parents may need to prepare to explain a number of confusing words and phrases. 💐 Due to the amount of twists spontaneously appearing, the story felt VERY rushed. 💐 There are WAY too many "good" vs "bad" character aesthetic stereotypes. . Have a wonderful day and happy reading! . Full review on my blog. Mini #bookreview : Nocturnal by @wilderpoetry . ⭐⭐⭐⭐ . "you loved me quietly, like footprints in the snow. (you were there and i wasn't expecting you.)" . As a lover of poetry, I had to get my hands on Nocturnal. This free verse style collection of poetry captivates you with every word, drawing upon themes of love and loss and self exploration through the use of the written word and nature symbolism. . As poetry is subjective in nature, this review will focus more on relatability and the flow of the collection. Again, this is my reading experience, which may differ from your own. . Pros 🌙 The structure of the poems, the title of the novel and the design of the collection is not only stunning but relatable to the poems within its pages. 🌙 The poems are very relatable, diving into a multitude of themes: loss, love, toxic relationships, self love and more. 🌙 Not only is it a fun poetry style, but Wilder Poetry accurately reflects 'free verse' style. . Woe 🌙 There are times when I had difficulty identifying when a poem ended and a new one began. 🌙 Though all beautiful themes, I found theme scattered rather than carefully flowing from one theme to the next. . Have a wonderful day and happy reading! . Full review on my blog. Mini #bookreview : Prince Charming (1) by Rachel Hawkins . ⭐⭐⭐ . "…all that matters is the truth as you know it, and as the ones who love you know it." . Book two of five complete in the @the.book.junkie.trials. Overall, made me laugh super hard and smile until the very end. . Pros 💐 Hawkins’ young adult novel’s a light and fast-paced read full of INCREDIBLE amounts hilarious dialogue and SUPER CHEESY (yet you love it) moments! 💐 Contrary to my thoughts going into this novel, Prince Charming is NOT an insta-love or love triangle story … EUREKA! 💐 Daisy, our quirky and witty main character, is an epic MC. She’s an adorable and witty nerd who's sarcastic yet charming, enjoys "geek con" festivities and is an independent thinker. 💐 There’s a lot of attention to family and understanding explored. . Woe 💐 There's a lack of research done regarding Scotland! The “medical bill” references, character names, clothing worn at ceremonies and parties — the lack of research made the novel feel less authentic. 💐 The pacing was WAY off. Everything felt SO RUSHED! Once I started getting into one part of the story, I was SWEPT off to the next! It felt as though I was reading a screenplay at points rather than a novel simply. 💐 Due to the pacing, the development between Daisy and “he who shall not be named” felt incredibly unrealistic and lack-luster. There's little interaction and development of these two, which is a shame since I do love them together. . Have a wonderful day and happy reading! . Full review on my blog. 2019 Reading Challenge

2019 Reading Challenge
Jenna | Bookmark Your Thoughts has
read 31 books toward
her goal of
52 books.

Last month (I think), I announced how I was starting Down the TBR Hole and WWW Wednesday posts. However, I’m not really a fan of the latter … I just find it a lot of work to do the post but don’t find a use for it for me. But I AM sticking with Down the TBR Hole posts … those are a necessity! I WILL try to do them weekly, but I’m not going to make a schedule … that stuff just stresses me OUT!

I’ve also started taking more Bullet Journal requests! Alex @ Whimsy Pages suggested I do a Harry Potter theme for the N.E.W.T. reading challenge in August … and voila! It was a lot of fun. A NUMBER of people asked if I would be open to more theme based layouts, which I’m TOTALLY down for. Honestly, my go-to is floral. But if ANY of you have requests, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! Don’t be shy!

Okay … real talk. I decided to participate in The Book Junkie Trials … and failed. UGH! Yes … a post WILL be coming out later this week about that. I finished 3 of 5 books. I honestly had NO time in July. Part of me wasn’t going to post about it, but I think it’s important to showcase that we don’t always finish challenges … and that’s okay! I love the challenge, but it’s A LOT! From having to post Twitter things and the micro challenges, I got REALLY overwhelmed. I URGE you all to try it, but I don’t think I will participate next year. You TOTALLY should, but my anxiety levels can’t handle it ha-ha!

Second last thing is that I’m participating in the NE.W.T.s reading challenge in August … SO EXCITED! This was is just straightforward reading, so I’m not as anxious. And the challenge allows me to participate in the following buddy reads AND read-a-long:

Lastly, I added a “memberships, badges and rep codes” page to make things easier. I also plan to add a “book tag” list later in August, where I list ALL the book tags I’ve come across in case you’re in need of one. If you have suggestions, send me an email!

Well, I may disappear for about a week. I’m visiting my family so I won’t be as active on social media. As of July, it’s been great! I’ve been spending more time with my friends, finding fun places to blog and chill, saw Toy Story 4 (loved it but cried … what a shocker) and celebrated two of my close friends getting married … on the hottest day of the year … but that’s okay! That’s what open bar is for! Honestly though, it’s been a lovely July … so here’s to August!

  1. Oh, thank you for adding my review to your wrap up! 😀 💞
It sounds like you’ve had a good month! 😀 You’ve got quite a few buddy reads and reading challenges going on, go you!
I’ve been thinking about your themes, and I thought hey I know! This idea comes from my theme at work, every month when I change me wallpaper on my computer I’ve had a cartoon animal so I thought maybe you could do an animal theme, you’re very outdoors-y so I thought it would be cute! You could do little cartoonish animals, like an otter since I know you love them & POOH! OH! You should have a Winnie the Pooh themed month! Why didn’t I think about that before?! 😛

    Have a great August! 😀

    1. I loved it! I like your reviews because they aren’t long but still detailed, so I have enough time to read it and still get enough information.

I do! I also can’t wait for ours (I plan to email you about that soon BTW).

And I’m adding Winnie the Pooh as a theme! Honestly, I’m not the best at drawing cartoons but I have an idea …. hmmm … I see it formulating now …

      And thank you, love!

    1. THANK YOU!! I’ve been SLOWLY getting better at my theme but I’m hoping to get a camera to take nicer photos 😀

AWE NO! Ah well … life happens. I still plan to post a “wrap up” post … the shaaaaaaaaaaaame.

Of course! i love it (as well as all your other posts he-he). Have a lovely August, darlin’! ❤

  2. July passed way too quickly, that’s true. Time has been flying quicker and quicker… I need it to slow down a little bit. My cousin came to visit on 15th of June, which feels like yesterday and already next week we need to drive him back to the airport!

I love the green of that «Matilda» book ❤ I also picked it up for the reading rush (it was such a quick read with lots of funny illustrations 😀 ) and I feel like a 10-11 years-old me would have LOVED this book so much.

Also, I love your instagram mini-reviews. I'm yet to succeed at taking pictures of the books I'm actually reading, I always try to follow the "theme" instead.
Fun fact: I was meant to take inta photos last weekend and I FORGOT! It was like Sunday afternoon when it hit me "I don't have any photos for next week!" but then it was too late… I usually take my photos very early in the morning, when the light is the best in my room. *facepalm*

And thank you for featuring my post 🙂 I hope you get to try the IGIST app. The publisher actually reached out and sent me the physical copy so I could try the Augmented Reality feature on the app, and it's mindblowing what they can do with technology these days!

You definitely should do the Book junkie trials wrap up, I'm interested to see how it all went. Next year we participate in the Reading Rush together! Woop-woop! ❤

    1. P.S. I find monthly wrap ups to be the hardest posts to write… I still need to somehow compile my July wrap up and August monthly goals, and it’s 2nd of August already and I haven’t started any of NEWTs books D: *deep breath* *no panicking* 😀

    2. Awe yeay! I think she would’ve too! It’s a lovely book! I need to re-watch the film sometime soon.

Luckily, my book review photos fit my theme but it does take some extra time ha-ha! I sometimes have to filter the colours … he-he-he

Oh man … I think that will be me next week. I’m visiting my family for a week so I doubt I will post much … oh weeeeeeelllllll.

That’s so cool of the author to do that! I do plan to check it out … eventually … I NEED MORE TIME!

And yes!! Yes we shall!! I can’t wait to try it out next year!

  3. Great wrap up, Jenna! ❤ Your bookstagram photos are seriously so pretty! I physically cannot stop gushing over them! ❤ I watched Toy Story 4 this past month as well, and LOVED it! Oh my gosh, this series will always have my entire heart. Good luck with the NEWTs in August! I hope you have a lovely month, sweets! ❤

    1. Thank you, love ❤ AWWWWWWWWWWWWE! THANKS! I'm trying to get better at not rushing them … I wait for the perfect lighting and then edit a lot ha-ha. PREVIEW also helps, since i can see if the theme still works.

AH YES! I was so happy with it but I also totally blubbered … I'm such an emotional person ha-ha. I think because it was the closing of a chapter so I had that bittersweet "I love this series but sad to see it go" feeling ha-ha.

Thanks darlin'! Have a lovely month as well ❤

    1. I know eh?? Crazy. And thank you! I thought the cover was super cool, so I’m glad the shot turned out well. And I try … I would like to get a better camera down the road but that costs MULLAH!

And thank you! So far it’s been lovely, though I miss my condo and miss my yoga and miss time to read lol!!
