The Sunshine Blogger Award Number Nine

Hello beautiful people!

OH! MY! GOODNESS!!! Number nine?! You all are WAY too kind to me, just sayin’. Thank you so much Sofii @ A Book. A Thought. for nominating me! This woman … is LITERALLY one of the biggest sweethearts I know! I’ve had the amazing opportunity to get to know her over the past couple of years in the blogging world, and I can honestly say she has the most beautiful personality!

What I love though are how her posts are written … you REALLY hear her voice when reading them, with all the personal type statements and grammatical flare (bold and highlighted sections … emoji’s … you name it). So please, please, PLEASE — take the time to visit her site!

What is the Sunshine Blogger Award?

The Sunshine Blogger Award is given to those who are creative, positive and inspiring while spreading sunshine to the blogging community.

The Rules

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their blog.
  2. Answer the 11 questions the blogger asked you.
  3. Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions.
  4. List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award in your post/or on your blog.

One. What’s your favorite lesser known book or series and why?

Akatsuki no Yona by Mizuho Kusanagi ↠ I actually got into this series after watching the TV show … and finding out that there was only ONE season to watch … which doesn’t finish off the story (the manga is ongoing, so I’m assuming that’s why).

This is DEFINITELY one of my top manga series, one I REALLY think isn’t loved as much as it should be. The story is intriguing, the characters are HILARIOUS and unique, the artwork is GORGEOUS … what’s not to love?! Maybe manga in general isn’t well known in the book blogging world (or just Goodreads), but this needs more love!

Two. Describe the best food you’ve ever read about in a book.

Most stereotypical answer … it’s gotta be the food that they serve at the Hogwarts Halloween Dinner! I always find Rowling’s description of the meals so mouthwatering!

Three. Would you rather be a character in a whimsical magical tale or an epic space opera?

Whimsical Magical Tale! I love SciFi, don’t get me wrong. But when I daydream and image myself in a different world, it’s always more fantasy and magical realms rather than space oriented (unless I just watched Killjoys or Star Trek, then my mind wanders).

Four. If you could change something about your favorite book, what would you change?

One of my all-time favourite books is S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. I absolutely ADORE this novel … but if I could change ONE thing, I would’ve liked for it to be a full-length novel rather than a novella. There’s so much more that could’ve been explored, allowing room to get to know the main character and all the other characters a bit more.

Five. Why did you start blogging?

To find that love of reading again.

Honestly, I’ve told my “why I blog” story more times than I can count … so I won’t bore you with the details too much. But after university, I forgot what it was like to REALLY just sit down and enjoy a book … not over-analyze it, not try to make essay topics and break it apart … just to simply enjoy the novel. So my friend suggested blogging and writing reviews.

I stick around now to do this, but also because I truly love this community. Leaving would feel like leaving a large portion of my friends and family, so I hope to continue here for a VERY long time.

Six. What is your most controversial bookish opinion?

Oh boy … I’m not quite sure what are and aren’t controversial bookish topics nowadays ha-ha! I guess I don’t believe in book banning and censorship? That typically gets people going ha-ha!

Obviously, I think certain books and such are too mature for certain age groups … and there are books with VERY controversial topics that even I question. But overall, I think book banning and censorship is NOT the answer. Our society has this compulsive need to protect younger age groups rather than expose them to the real world … and I can tell you, it doesn’t help in the long run (I’m not a parent nor a guardian, so I try not to say too much).

I also don’t think that people should be censored as adults from certain topics. I know there are topics that are hard for people to digest or cause triggers, but The Orangutan Librarian brought up some REALLY good points about how counterproductive this is to our own mental health and psyche (you may have noticed, but I actually stopped putting trigger warnings in my own reviews at the top … I sometimes discuss a few things IN my review, but I removed that “warnings and trigger” list … and I’m very happy with my decision).

Some fruit for thought.

Seven. Personal library or public library?

Personal Library! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE public libraries. When I start travelling more, I want to make sure I visit at least ONE library during my trips. But there’s something so lovely about having your own library … I like being able to pick a book and sit in the comfort of my home, knowing I get to keep it afterwards. And if you don’t want to keep it, you get to donate! Which always makes me feel good!

Eight. What is your favorite thing about yourself?

I’m copying an answer I put the other day in a different tag ha-ha! Probably that I’m overall a happy and sensitive person. Like Sofii, I’m a Hufflepuff … very much to the stereotype ha-ha! I used to HATE being so sensitive (and there are days where it is a nuisance). But I’ve grown to realize how wonderful it is to care deeply for things and people … I think it helps make me a better person.

And I really do love knowing that my laugh and smile are contagious — it’s probably one of the biggest compliments I’ve ever received (which I get a lot, so that makes me feel even more happy)!

Nine. What book character would you name a pet after? (and what kind of animal is the pet?)

I have two, both I can’t choose between ha-ha! Magnus and Tessa! I’d love to name a cat or dog Magnus from Mortal Instruments … both because the name is SUPER adorable and I love that character so much! I also think the name Tessa is flippin’ cute! That’s the main character’s name in 100 Days of Sunlight, who’s very sweet and loving (once you get to know her).

Ten. Where would you go if you could go anywhere within driving distance (like 5 hours max) right now?

New York City, New York, USA! Yes … TECHNICALLY this is 7 hours driving wise away from me rather than 5 hours or less … but it’s the first place that came to mind that I really want to travel to! Though big cities tend to make me overwhelmed, I love New York City … a large portion of the reason is my obsession with Friends, but I actually love the vibe … all the plays, Central Park, the fun attractions … I need to go back soon (which MIGHT be happening sooner rather than later)!

Eleven. Who is your book boyfriend (or girlfriend)?

… no one ha-ha! I always find I can’t answer this question, because I don’t think of characters that way? I’m usually shipping them with someone else in the book ha-ha! I do love George Weasley from Harry Potter … so if I HAD to choose, probably him. Bookish girlfriend? Probably January Scaller from The Ten Thousand Doors of January.

My Questions to You

Not gonna lie, I stole a few from Sofii’s post … my creative juices are just not at an all-time high at this point ha-ha!

  1. Would you rather have your favourite book/book series become a TV show or a movie?
  2. Do you read with background noise or silence?
  3. How is your bookshelf organized? Post a photo if you can (and want to)!
  4. Would you rather spend a day with your favourite author or favourite character? Name who it would be!
  5. Do you plan out your TBR or are you more of a mood reader?
  6. Name 3 authors that you want to read more books by in 2020.
  7. Would you rather be a professional reviewer or famous author?
  8. Do you prefer series or a standalone?
  9. What’s your most controversial bookish topic?
  10. Would you rather only ever be able to read eBooks or use audiobooks for the rest of your life?
  11. Where would you go if you could go anywhere within driving distance (like 5 hours max) right now?

Tag! You’re it!

I know it says to nominate 11 people, but I’ve done this so many times that I don’t know for sure who I have or haven’t nominated. So, I’m nominating 5 people. As always, there’s absolutely NO pressure to participate!

  1. I loved reading your answers, Jenna 🙂! This was the first time I’ve seen someone openly state that they’re not in favor of trigger warnings. I personally don’t use them either because I have mixed feelings about them—for one thing, it’s difficult to account for everyone’s specific triggers. Honestly, it’s something I’ve been feeling a tad bad about lately since they’re almost becoming the new standard for book reviews. But, your reason for omitting them is interesting and very logical and assures me that we’re not bad people hahaha 😅.

    1. Thank you! And I’m glad I’m not the only one! I used to use them, but then reading that post made me realize a lot of things … a lot of which you mention, such as accounting everyone’s specific triggers. And sometimes listing triggers can cause a trigger … and so many other things. So no, you are DEFINITELY NOT a bad person 🙂 everyone writes reviews differently, and I think that’s what makes blogging so much fun.

      Thank you for commenting!

  2. This was an interesting read! Thank you for sharing it and for sharing a part of you with it. I, too, loved The Outsiders and share your thought of hoping it could have been longer and with deeper (story) character building. As a matter of fact, I hoped to see that in the movie, as well. It was the first book assignment that I received from a teacher (seventh grade – 1982) and, subsequently, the first time I walked away from a movie scratching my head. I had poor comprehension skills at the time; Dally – Darry – Soda Pop, and the others, were difficult for me to follow. Congratulations on being nominated! – RLG

  3. Awww, your words made my day, honey, THANK YOU SO MUCH! 😭 I won’t get tired of saying how blessed I feel to have met you ❤️ & LOVES your answers.

Whimsical Magical Tale? YES, PLEASE, Magnus and Tessa are perfect names for pets, I love them & OMG, I LOVE that you love your sensitivity, I think just like you, there was a time when I regretted being so sensitive, but today I enjoy it and celebrate, I think it’s a great quality caring for others and being empathetic, not everyone is. 🥰 Hufflepuff Twins! 💛

I hope you have the most amazing day, love & enjoy your reading! 😊

    1. OF COURSE!!! 😭❤️ You’re such an amazing person and I’m so glad to have gotten to know you more this past year!

I love those names so much!!! They’re so cute!

YAY FOR HUFFLEPUFF TWINS! I honestly still get flustered with my sensitive side at times, but I think in the long run it makes me a better person 😊

Have a wonderful day and happy reading, gorgeous! 🥰

  4. Great answers! Also, I agree with you that Sofii is fantastic and that you really can hear her voice in the way she writes and formats her posts.

Oh, and yay for having a manga as an answer to a question. I don’t see a whole lot of people talking about manga, at least not as much as the standard novel, here in the online book community. I think that’s why I make sure to do manga reviews every Monday, because I really enjoy reading them.

Yeah, figuring out who to tag is often the most difficult part of doing these awards/tags. Though I haven’t done tags on my blog in months, so I don’t have any idea who I would tag if I did a tag myself, lol.

    1. Thank you, darlin’! ❤ She's such a sweetheart! And totally! There's a reason why she has so many followers ha-ha!

I really should start reviewing manga … but I don't know where to start! I guess I could treat them like graphic novels and review a volume at a time? Or i'd wait until I read the entire manga. What do you think? Any suggestions?

You haven't?!?! Hmmmm … I might have to remedy that and tag you in some stuff I have coming up!! 😉

      1. I do my manga reviews with one review per volume. That works pretty nicely for me at least. But I could see the merit in reviewing the series, or a big chunk of the series at once; they do read pretty quickly.

Haha, well I look forward to some future book tags.

  6. As I was reading “describe the best food…” pizza instantly popped into my mind 😀 but I don’t think I read any books with pizzas in them 😦 In Skyward they eat a lot of algae *yack*

Oooh, I’m team magical world as well. Sci-Fi seems too harsh and dark. 😀
