Hello beautiful people!
You know what time it is?! It’s time for a book tag! It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve done a tag (awards don’t count), so I’m glad I was tagged to do The Not-So-Perfect Book Tag by Lauren @ Narrative Paradise!
If you haven’t come across her website … what are you doing?! Get over there! Lauren’s an incredible human being, with a large personality, and zest for life and fun! She always takes the time to really get to know other bloggers, commenting on their posts and making them feel welcomed. So thank you so much for being an epic person, Lauren!
The creator of this epic tag is Alex @ Lost in Translation.
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT GENRE
pick a book that undermines the genre as a whole
The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare
Now before you all *gasp* and want to hit me over the head with a book … hear me out. I LOVED the first three, when this series was ORIGINALLY a trilogy. I found it fascinating and it kept my interests. But now? I just find the whole world way too big and the additions just tarnished the series for me …
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT DIALOGUE
pick a book with dialogue written so poorly that it made you cringe
In Reality by Loralie Murrison
I wanted to like this a lot … and in a number of ways, this was a decent read. But the LACK of dialogue was KILLING ME! Don’t TELL me about their fight, let me READ IT! And when there was dialogue, it felt so … unnatural, as in not how we talk day-to-day.
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT SETTING
pick a book that takes place in a location that you wish hadn’t been picked
Prince Charming by Rachel Hawkins
It’s not that Scotland is a bad setting … at all — it’s one of my top 10 places I want to visit! But Hawkins doesn’t reflect the Scottish landscape nor the culture very well in this book. It’s actually a big complaint with both Scottish and non-Scottish readers … so that’s saying something. She should’ve either done England OR researched Scotland more.
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT MAIN CHARACTER
pick the most annoying main character
Bella in Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer
Yup … I haven’t picked on this series in a while, so you can’t get mad! Well … you can, but please don’t ha-ha. I’m sorry but seriously, Bella is just TOO much in this series … ESPECIALLY in New Moon. I get breaking up can be rough and I get that relationships are complex, but really? REALLY?!! I was SO frustrated that I almost DNF’d this book at the time.
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT BLURB
a blurb that was so far from the truth that it made you do a double-take and check you had read the right book
I actually have no idea for this one … especially since there’s been a number of times where I don’t read the blurbs deliberately ha-ha!
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT FRIEND
from whiny attention-seeker to full-on traitor, pick a character that you think is the worst friend ever
Twinkle in From Twinkle, with Love by Sandhya Menon
I actually DNF’d this because of HOW much I couldn’t stand Twinkle … not only is she EXTREMELY self-centered, but she’s not a nice friend whatsoever. She complains about the SMALLEST things to Sahil, the biggest sweetheart ever! From undermining his opinions to being emotionally abusive, I honestly couldn’t stand her. She would even ADMIT she’s wrong, yet not apologize. Her supposedly “best friend” isn’t that great either to be frank.
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT LOVE INTEREST
pick a character you think would be an awful romantic partner
Peter in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series by Jenny Han
Now … before you all get mad … I adore this series. Honestly, Lara Jean has risen as one of my all-time favourite characters. But Peter’s NOT that great of a guy — especially in book two. He’s a bully, emotionally abusive and really doesn’t defend Lara Jean when she needs it … especially against a certain female character (and no … going through a really hard time in life DOESN’T give you an excuse to be a bully). Seriously, I wanted her to be with John …
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT VILLAIN
pick a character that you thought would have amazing evil plans but fell short and disappointed you
Another one that I have no idea about ha-ha! There are a lot of main characters that I’ve been disappointed by, but I feel like a lot of villains are fleshed out well … that’s been my reading experience, anyways.
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT FAMILY
pick a horrible bookish family
The families in the Charlotte Holmes series by Brittany Cavallaro
Okay … I know a lot of it is for story development … BUT CHARLOTTE AND JAMIE HAVE VERY IRRESPONSIBLE PARENTS! Charlotte’s mom and dad are BASICALLY the reasons why she has bad anxiety and turns to drugs (thank gosh she has a loving uncle who sees her for what she is … a TEENAGER)! And Jamie’s dad practically pushed him to go face on danger, even when he’s almost died MULTIPLE times! And his mother doesn’t trust him right away … which really bothered me. My goodness … where are the children services in this series?
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT PLOT TWIST
pick a book with the worst plot twist
Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer
Yes … it’s apparently pick on Twilight day. But really, the plot twist in this book?! The first one with Bella’s surprise was just … ugh … the vampire lore lover in me was just SO frustrated with this. And then the “what-seemed-epic-turned-dull” moment at the end? WHAT WAS THAT?! That was such a cool portion of the novel and then the twist?! Extremely lame in my personal opinion.
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT TROPE
pick a trope you wish would be avoided in all future publications
Forbidden Love: The high school student and young teacher trope
Look … whether they’re VERY close in age or not (which these two aren’t, by the way), it’s not appropriate. As someone who was going to be an educator, I just can’t get pass this one … it’s beyond inappropriate. Though I’m not gonna lie, I totally watched this TV series.
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT COVER
pick that awful cover that almost made you miss a great book
Library Wars: Love & War by Kiiro Yumi
The story in this manga is epic … a military group to protect books and libraries?! Probably the only military I would actually join ha-ha. It’s basically a story about a world where countries are banning books, so other groups have been created to protect those books and people’s freedom to read. But this cover? It could really use an update.
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT ENDING
pick a book that has the most disappointing ending
Her Royal Highness by Rachel Hawkins
I wanted to love this book … but unfortunately, it was just okay. Though the main character’s super adorable, and the banter between her and her love interest is comical … there was a lot of substance missing. But the BIGGEST thing that made me rather annoyed was the ending … it just … ends?! Seriously, no cute little wrap up or anything. Maybe some people like this kind of ending, but it made me feel as though the book was left incomplete.
THE NOT-SO-PERFECT EXPECTATIONS
pick a book that was so hyped that it disappointed you, and you can’t understand why everyone loves it so much
A Question of Holmes by Brittany Cavallaro
Another series I wanted to love … but just felt okay with at the end. What’s a shame is that I Jamie and Charlotte really started to grow on me … I began wanting to know more about their characters and about their futures. But the “mystery” in this novel was SUCH a lackluster … honestly, I kept forgetting that this is a mystery novel, not a love story. But the focus on Jamie and Charlotte’s blossoming relationship just overtook the entire story … so my expectations for this grand adventure and daring final mystery were … well, not met whatsoever.
