The Reading Rush 2020

Hello beautiful people!

Alex @ Whimsy Pages and Evelyn @ Evelyn Reads both recently posted about The Reading Rush challenge on their blogs, reminding me how much I’ve wanted to do this EVERY year … yet always end up being busy. Though I’m working full time, working from home definitely provides more time to read — and I’ve been in a BAD reading slump. So hopefully, this will help me out!

What is The Reading Rush Challenge?

The creators of this challenge are Ariel and Raeleen, two book blogging YouTubers. According to their website, the reading rush “…is a week-long readathon for book lovers all around the world. For one week readers gather together to read as much as they possibly can and to participate in challenges and giveaways”. This originally started in 2013 as a BookTubeAThon, something that began to grow and branch out over the years! Honestly, it’s pretty impressive.

Here are some helpful resources and fun links to explore:

The Prompts

You can either read seven books per prompt, or you can have a few books that fit more than one prompt. Honestly, you can read ONE book that fits all seven … if you can find one. The main thing though so that you complete all the prompts:

  1. Read a book with a cover that matches the colour of your birth stone.
  2. Read a book that starts with the word ‘the’.
  3. Read a book that inspired a movie you’ve already seen.
  4. Read the first book you touch.
  5. Read a book completely outside of your house.
  6. Read a book in a genre you’ve always want to read more of.
  7. Read a book that takes place on different continent than where you live.

Due to some trips happening near the end of this challenge, I am actually starting tomorrow: Saturday, July 18, 2020. To make it fair, I will only have until Friday, July 24, 2020 to finish this challenge! I’m also not entering the giveaway or anything, so I’m not worrying too much about it. I just honestly want to participate!

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
↠ Prompt 3. I’m literally watching the movie the same day this is posted (but at night). It’s kind of cheating, but I’m making it work.
China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan
↠ Prompt 7. Technically, it does take place in North American in some parts. But it also takes place in multiple other continents!
When the World Didn’t End by Caroline Kaufman
↠ Prompt 1. I’m a March baby, so aquamarine! I feel as though this is pretty close!
↠ Prompt 5. I’m going to read this on my balcony and during some car rides!
↠ Prompt 6. Honestly, I love poetry — but I haven’t read as much as I’d like.
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
↠ Prompt 2. There aren’t many books that start with “The” that I own and haven’t read yet … and I’ve been eager to read this!
↠ Prompt 3. I just randomly selected from books I already own, since the challenge starts really soon.

    1. I just read yours! It looks like we are on the same page of combining prompts into one book for some ha-ha! I am really excited! I’ve been meaning to pick it up but just haven’t yet. I’m excited to know your thoughts on The Poppy Wars! I saw it was on your list and I’ve been meaning to read it!

  1. Happy reading, Jenna, and good luck with the challenge! I’m participating for the first time this year as well, and I’ve never done a readathon so I’m nervous and excited.😅 But since I’m on break and staying home all the time, I decided why not try it out!

    1. Thank you, darlin’! Happy reading to you too! I’m hoping I’ll be able to get lots done! I have tomorrow off of work, so hopefully that helps me get some books in! I’m a little worried that I picked a few too many longer books … so I might switch one out at the end if I feel like I won’t be able to finish it ha-ha!

  2. I really wanted to participate this year but I really don’t read very quickly😂 And not many of the prompts fit the books I have on my shelves right now unfortunately. But I will be cheering everyone on! I hope you enjoy the books you’ve chosen😊 I’m particularly excited about The Starless Sea so I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

    1. I had to borrow one from the library since there was one or two that didn’t fit with the books I own ha-ha! I’m not a fast reader like I used to be … so we shall see. At this rate, I’m hoping to finish 2 books by the end lol! And thank you! I’m excited too!

  3. i’m currently reading the starless sea, and it’s really good! i’m so excited to find out more about what it’s actually about, because i know a lot of people have said that the premise is hard to explain/it’s best to go in knowing nothing.

good luck with the reading rush, jenna! i actually thought about participating, but decided against it, because the prompts weren’t interesting me :”)

    1. That’s how I feel so far! I didn’t end up finishing it for the challenge (work got in the way …) but I do plan to finish it! I feel confused — but I still feel really intrigued?! I get why people haven’t been able to really explain it ha-ha!

I didn’t end up completing it, but it was fun to try! I would like to try some other challenges this year … but maybe a longer reading time ha-ha!

    1. Awe, thank you! I’m FINALLY almost done (yes .. didn’t finish my reading challenge lol). I do really like it, but I find it overwhelming? I’ve never read a third POV book where they don’t have their own chapters — like, you see everyone’s POV in each chapter. So I had to take breaks. But I’m almost done and eager to get into book two!
