Heartstopper: Volume Four by Alice Oseman || Book Review

Charlie didn’t think Nick could ever like him back, but now they’re officially boyfriends. Charlie’s beginning to feel ready to say those three little words: I love you.

Nick’s been feeling the same, but he’s got a lot on his mind – not least coming out to his dad, and the fact that Charlie might have an eating disorder.

As summer turns to autumn and a new school year begins, Charlie and Nick are about to learn a lot about what love means.

Beautifully heart-wrenching and aesthetically stunning. Another fantastic story in Oseman’s graphic novel series.

The fourth volume has to be both my favourite yet the one that made me cry the most. It’s equal parts wholesome and gut-wrenching. The different romances, especially Charlie and Nick’s, have developed so much during the past four volumes; it was great to see these relationships flourish as they all grow to know one another.

Charlie, however, goes through a lot in this volume. Previous volumes have shown his anxiety and depression, but volume four explores this in a much more in-depth level. It was honestly really hard to read at some points, but I appreciate the thoughtfulness and careful writing Oseman used during these moments. Nick, Charlie’s family, and friends show a healthy and responsible way to help Charlie cope, which is something many novels depicting these heavier topics lack. Since these parts can be triggering, I would suggest treading with caution.

I am so in love with Heartstopper that it always takes me so long to pick up a book afterward … it’s so hard to move on afterward. I definitely cannot wait to read more of Charlie and Nick’s story in future issues!

Signature that says "love jenna" in gold. A group of green pastel leaves are in the upper right hand corner.
